Inspiring enthusiasm for STEM through baseball & statistics
We are honored to create and chair the inaugural SpringSpirit Slugging Statistics camp to be held the week of June 10 – 14, 2019 at the SpringSpirit Youth Sports and Education Complex. We welcome your support of this groundbreaking event which combines the SpringSpirit children’s love of sports with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) lessons, engaging them with the power of these disciplines, providing them with leadership development, and inspiring them with an ambitious vision for what they can achieve.
SpringSpirit is a leading non-profit that invests in tomorrow’s leaders by holistically serving our city’s underserved youth. Their mission is to provide safe pathways for youth to realize life opportunities through sports, education and mentoring programs that are based on Christian principles. With your help and sponsorship, their most involved and dedicated students will be able to continue building their personal pathways to success.
The potential for impact is great as SpringSpirit is situated in the heart of a high-density community, where there are an estimated 10,500 youth under the age of 18 within a 2-mile radius. A few facts about why we have chosen to support them:
· In 2018, SpringSpirit served 1,760 primarily latino/a kids (ages 4-18) and their families
· 97% of the students SpringSpirit serves are minority, 88% qualify for the free/reduced lunch program, and 81% are considered “at risk” of not graduating from high school
· Through their programs, SpringSpirit engages in 40,000+ community interactions each year
Our society is in an era of constant scientific discovery and technological advancement, and our economy will increasingly rely upon those who can lead in these areas. Investments in STEM education will empower and equip children to achieve their dreams, and enrich the future of the Houston community.

Curriculum Focus
Baseball
We engage children in our program with sports, emphasizing the value of both strong individual character and a commitment to exceptional teamwork. This physical practice establishes the foundation for our further exploration of life skills: STEM education & leadership potential.
Mathematics
We demonstrate the utility of math in describing on-field excellence with statistics. Each lesson integrates lectures with collaborative exercises, culminating in a competition to design the optimal baseball team subject to real-life salary and roster constraints.
Leadership
We cultivate the essential values of persistence, responsibility, excellence, and scholarship. These values are enforced both on the field and in the classroom, and developed with exercises in communication & interactions with distinguished guests.
“I want to be remembered as a ballplayer who gave all I had to give.”
